The ritual sweat lodge tradition has as many roots as shapes and designs. Celts, Aztecs, Toltecs, Zulus, Yorubas, Lakotas, Dineh and many other original tribes had (in many cases still do) some type of ritual sweat-bath. The physical structure, the theme and the ceremonial design of such an event, varies from culture to culture, but essentially almost all of them have the same objectives:
- Body purification through sweating
- Spiritual purification through sacred chanting, prayers and ritual
- Mind purification through the liberation of emotions and the harnessing of phobias such as pain, anger, fear, jealousy, envy, silence, intimacy, darkness, closeness, claustrophobia and the act of consciously facing collective lies, personal truths and addictions
Because of the truly holistic nature of this healing activity, it is seeing as a cosmic rebirth. By going through the purification of all his / her parts, the participant lives the experience of a conspicuous rebirth whose process must place him / her one step ahead in his/ her own personal evolution. Thus in general, the physical structure of the sweat lodge is given the value and the symbolism of being the Mother Earth’s womb where the “new” being is gestated.
The fact that this sweating ritual forms were created many centuries ago by different people, some of which had a nomadic lifestyle whose food needs were fulfilled by hunting and collecting, and also by others that were agriculturists that fully depended on the seasons and the moon cycles for their survival and that for the same reasons, all were in intimate contact with nature and the elements, makes of this ritual a great channel towards our reconnection with the spirit of all life; the sun, the moon, the earth, the cosmic cycles, the animal and plant kingdoms, the spirit of the ancestors and with our true being. But also because nomadism, agriculture and hunting are out of context for most of today’s people within the urban conglomerates, and people, their lives, their values and the world had changed so much since this ceremonies were created, we have detected the need to actualize and re-adapt some of the elements of this beautiful tradition. Therefore with all due respect, commitment and with the great mystery’s blessings… Taking the sacred tradition of the Lakota sweat bath as a millennial and perfected base, we have developed a series of ritual and therapeutic forms synchronic and resonant with the needs, values and symbols of the present age.
